The Axis Deer is one of the most beautiful
animals we have on the ranch. Native to India these animals
have a striking reddish-brown coat, marked with very distinct
white spots & a black dorsal stripe that runs down
the back. White is also lined underneath the inside of
the leg, belly, & underneath the throat. The Axis
buck can be hard horned anytime of the year. The bucks
usually have three tines that measure trophy quality in
length anywhere from 27-36 inches tall. The bucks average
around 35 inches high at their shoulders and weigh anywhere
from 150-250 pounds. The does are much smaller & usually
weigh anywhere from 75-125 pounds.The Axis meat is one
of the best tasting venison you'll put in your mouth.
They are grazers much like cattle & don't have the
gamey taste like Whitetails. Axis usually do not store
fat so the meat has no marble. The Axis steak has .06
grams of fat, 26 calories, and 13.9 mg cholesterol. In
comparison, skinless chicken has .88 grams of fat, 34
calories, and 20.0 mg cholesterol. Lean beef has 1.76
grams of fat, 41 calories, and 16.86 mg cholesterol.
